Stand By Referee Procedures and Information

Stand By (SB) positions are an honest attempt to work officials into matches and an absolute necessity. They are on site to fill in for assigned officials when sickness, dead batteries, injuries, etc. occur, and they happen at ALL tournaments, during day of play and often a few days before the event Stand By positions help assure 100% of the tournament games are covered. Tournaments have referee tents to hang out in (which are supervised by a referee coordinator all day), gifts for participating, and lunches at the field. Sometimes they are not needed to fill in on a game, but usually every site has to use at least one stand by, as we just have no idea when and where the emergencies will hit. While you are at the fields, you can do whatever you want if you are not needed on a game. Do homework, read, watch movies on your devices, video games…anything you would be doing at home, yet we pay you $10 an hour to do it (not to mention feed you and give you a gift as well, *smile*).

Stand By’s are generally paid $10 an hour to be at the fields for these emergencies. OR game fees for any matches they pick up (and they are only assigned to positions they are comfortable with, so even though you are a stand by “referee” if you prefer to AR, we would only assign you to an open AR position), and sometimes a combination of both, depending on how long you are scheduled to be a stand by.

Occasionally, you are assigned a stand by that will cover more than one game time slot (2.5 or 3.5 hrs) that is set for more than $10 an hour. In those cases we are guaranteeing you will earn that amount at the field that day, between stand by and game fees. The fee for any game you pick up will be deducted from the pre-set stand by guarantee before the hourly rate is calculated

SB Cancellations

Check Arbiter after 10 PM each Friday and Saturday night to see if you SB position is still scheduled. While not often, some SB may be canceled the day before play due to tournament constraints.

When to arrive

Arrive and check in with the Referee Site Coordinator by the start time of your SB assignment in Arbiter and be ready to step on the field at that time if necessary. You do need to be on site and remain on site. You do not need to be arrive earlier than your SB start time.

SB start 10am and after

If your SB assignment starts after 10 AM and you are not already at the fields doing games prior to the assignment, call the Referee Site Coordinator to see if you are needed as a SB.

Passing time while SB

Stay near the referee tent while on SB, and feel free to do homework, read, or any other personal activity you wish to do if not needed to work matches. If you want to watch a match/need to step away make sure the coordinator knows where you are and can reach you on a cell. You MUST stay on site.

Duration of SB

Plan for at least the length of time stated on the SB assignment (which is indicated in hours.

Assignments while on SB

If you are assigned a match your SB time will be calculated from the time you arrive until 30 – 40 minutes before the game you work. You will then be paid match fee for the game as well.

Calculation of pay

Regardless of the Arbiter fee on the assignment says, the rate is $10 an hour or game fee calculated from 30 – 40 minutes before any matches you pick up. Exceptions where your fee shows more than the hourly rate sometimes occur in cases where we are trying to make up for canceled match fees or based on how long we need you there shown in the game notes.

Getting paid

You need to sign in and out at the referee tent to be paid.
